The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF)—a private, operating foundation, established in 1999 and funded by an endowment from C. Harry and Janet H. Knowles—is seeking two Program Officers for Teacher Development to work as part of a team developing, implementing and refining the KSTF Teaching Fellows Program. The Teaching Fellows Program offers support and professional development for 165 of the nation’s best new high school science and math teachers for five years. KSTF seeks to strengthen the teaching profession and increase the US education system’s capacity to continually improve science and math education by creating a networked community of teachers who mentor and sustain new teachers, set and meet high standards for student learning, and create and uphold benchmarks of teacher professionalism grounded in a deep and nuanced understanding of the work of teaching. Rather than waiting for leaders to emerge from within the educational system, KSTF identifies and selects beginning teachers who show the potential to develop into outstanding teachers who lead from the classroom. Furthermore, KSTF seeks to understand and provide the kinds of sustained support, professional development, and learning opportunities these promising individuals need to reach their potential as teachers and leaders.
Three teams—each led by a Senior Program Officer—work together to design, implement, refine and study the KSTF Teaching Fellows Program. Important components of this work include: designing and leading professional development (online and in-person) for cohorts of Fellows; providing ongoing mentoring support to Fellows; supporting Fellows in accessing KSTF’s generous Fellowship benefits; and evaluating, researching, and writing about program components for continuous program improvement and generation of knowledge for the field. Program Officers work at the center of a broader national learning community that includes Teaching Fellows and KSTF staff, as well as master teachers and teacher educators, researchers and evaluators.
All KSTF Program Officers are:
- Committed to the belief that teaching is a critically important, complex, intellectually challenging profession
- Experienced teachers at the secondary level
- Experienced in mentoring beginning teachers, educating pre-service teachers and/or developing and providing professional development to teachers, particularly at the secondary level
- Knowledgeable of their subject matter
- Disposed to learn from their own practice and support other teachers in doing so.
KSTF is seeking two Program Officers, one for Team 2 and one for Team 3. The specific descriptions of those positions follow below.
Team 2 (supporting Fellows in years 3 & 4 of the Fellowship):
Our need is for a Program Officer with a science education background. The ideal candidate for this specific position has a combination of the following strengths and abilities (in addition to those listed above):
- Experience working with diverse student populations and/or supporting teachers in doing so
- Experience teaching high school chemistry, physics, and/or physical science
- Commitment to increasing educational opportunities for all students
- Experience with and ability to foster collaborative relationships in secondary school settings
- Knowledge of the current state of math and science education and its impacts on teachers and students
- A graduate degree in science education or a related field (or anticipating such). Doctorate is preferred.
Team 3 (supporting Fellows in year 5 of the Fellowship)
Our need is for a Program Officer with a background in teacher leadership. The ideal candidate for this specific position has a combination of the following strengths and abilities (in addition to those listed above):
- Experience in teacher leadership (formal or informal) in K-12 school settings
- A commitment to and experience with supporting teachers to cultivate professional communities and to develop as teacher leaders
- A graduate degree in math education or science education or a related field (or anticipating such). Doctorate is preferred.
Program Officer for Teacher Development positions are full-time, on-site in NJ (right outside Philadelphia) and will report to a Senior Program Officer, Teacher Development. The ability to work some weekends and travel (10-15%) is required. Salary is based on education and experience, and is competitive with university academic and K–12 administrative positions.
