Why Mathematics

“I grew up being told I was good at math because I was ‘a math person.’ Math brought a lot of enjoyment to my life, and I hated that ‘non-math people’ weren’t given a chance to love math. I want to be able to show students that there is math that they do everyday, which in fact, makes them math people. Being a person is being a math person!”

Professional Experience

Ishrat taught English in Turkey for two months and SAT prep classes in the United States for the past five years. Before pursuing a career in education, she spent summer 2014 interning in the marketing department at one of Turkey’s largest furniture companies, where she helped to plan a new store in Dubai.

Ishrat worked for Columbia University’s Rape Crisis Center for four years from 2012 to 2016. Also, she worked as a research intern in the mathematics education department at Columbia University for two summers, 2015 and 2016, and taught mathematics at Brown Summer High School during the summer of 2016.

“I have been lucky enough to have teachers who always seemed like they were having fun! I have loved math because of those teachers and realized the most fitting way to share my love of math was through teaching.”
