Andrea Moore began researching different career paths while still in high school. Her mother’s straightforward advice to “do what you love to do” made the decision easy: teach math. Combining her love of mathematics with an enthusiasm for teaching, Andrea decided to become a high school math teacher so she could instill in her students the same passion and love for the subject she had when growing up.
While in college at the University of South Carolina, Andrea participated in Semester at Sea, a unique shipboard program for global study abroad. As part of this program, she visited different classrooms in South Africa, India, Vietnam, Thailand, China and Guatemala. “My most memorable field experience was in Vietnam, where I visited a school for handicapped and deaf students. I spent an afternoon there communicating with a deaf teenage girl. Even though we had language barriers, we were able to communicate information about our families and lives through pictures.” Andrea has also worked with groups of adolescents at summer camps, and found she loved working with this particular age group.
Andrea graduated from Dutch Fork High School and earned a BA in mathematics and education from the University of South Carolina. A recipient of the Polston Family Mathematics and USC Leadership scholarships, Andrea was a Palmetto and South Carolina Teaching Fellow. She enjoys teaching in Lexington, where she can “help students in my state love mathematics as much as I do.”
