Mathematics Teacher/Team 1 Specialist
For the last 20 years, Maria Hernandez has taught mathematics at The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). While at NCSSM, she has been involved as a leader in various professional development workshops, projects and sessions focused on mathematical modeling and the effective use of technology in the classroom. Beyond her work in the classroom, Maria has served as a curriculum developer for Amplify Learning and a consultant for Fluid Math.
Maria holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from North Carolina State University and a Master of Science in mathematics from The University of North Carolina (UNC). In 2009, she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching—the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government specifically for K–12 mathematics teaching. Additionally, Maria is the recipient of The UNC Board of Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the NCSSM Award for Exceptional Contribution in Teaching Through Outreach and the NCSSM Keeper of the Dream Award for Contributions to Multicultural Enrichment Series. She has given numerous presentations at regional and national conferences of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). In working with high school teachers across the country, Maria shares real-world problems that engage students in hands-on problem-solving. Her work also focuses on fostering a collaborative classroom environment in which students are encouraged to share their ideas and become independent learners.
Through her work with the Women and Math Mentoring program and the North Carolina Hispanic Educational Youth Summit, she encourages young women and minority students to pursue further studies in math and science.
