Why Science

“Science, the scientific process, and scientific ideas have a tremendous impact on students’ lives. Students can be part of global scientific conversations if they have basic knowledge of scientific ideas, as well as the tools to explore more.”

Volunteer Experience

While working at the International Institute of Minnesota, Christine helped refugees find jobs as nursing assistants. For one year, she completed natural resource projects and emergency response work as a field crew member with the Minnesota Conservation Corps. In summer 2014, she participated in a program called US-Brazil Connect, in which she spent five months coaching high school aged Brazilian students to improve their English skills and confidence. She spent two months getting to know the students through Facebook and Google Hangouts, traveled to Brazil for one month to host a camp, and then chatted with the students online for two months following her trip.

Professional Experience

While in college, Christine spent a summer working at the Chicago Botanic Garden as a Research Experience for Undergraduates program participant. Following college, she worked as the head coach of a high school gymnastics team for two years and as an assistant coach for another two years. In the head coach role, it is noteworthy to mention that she pioneered the gymnastics program. Before transitioning to the field of education, Christine worked as an Integrated Pest Management Crew Leader for the City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks Department. In this position, she managed invasive plant species on 45,000 acres of land. She also conducted prescribed burning, responded to wildfires, hand-pulled plants and cut down invasive trees. For two of those years, she led crews in this work. Christine’s desire to make a direct impact on people led her to pursue a career in education.

Hobbies

Christine enjoys exploring the outdoors, ultimate frisbee and gymnastics.

The challenge of always being able to improve my techniques in ways that improve a student's experience in my classroom made me want to pursue teaching.
