Synopsis
The mission of the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF), to increase the quantity of high quality high school science and mathematics teachers in United States High Schools, calls for a deeper understanding of what it takes to prepare and support successful teachers. On September 21, 2006, KSTF convened a group of 41 individuals with a broad range of perspectives and expertise to address three essential questions with regard to secondary science teacher preparation: What do we know, what do we need to find out, and what research will help us fill in the gaps? MORE >>

Evaluation team

KSTF has partnered with Mark St. John and colleagues at Inverness Research to serve as external evaluators and ‘critical friends’ for KSTF’s programs. Inverness researchers attend various KSTF meetings, including the Summer Meeting and teaching fellowship cohort meetings, to provide an outsider’s perspective on what takes place and to collect systematic data on the experiences of teaching fellows and other participants.  They meet with KSTF leadership regularly to provide feedback and advice about how to improve all of the foundation's programs.

Conference series

The Knowles Conference series provides an opportunity for scholars in education, experienced teachers, and Knowles Research and Teaching Fellows to meet and discuss important topics in science and mathematics education. KSTF expects that each conference in the series will contribute a significant product to the fields of mathematics and science education research and practice. The first conference was held September 19-21, 2006, on the essential research for the preparation of secondary science teachers. The second conference on the essential research for the preparation of mathematics teachers was held May 28-30, 2008.
